Booking a wedding photographer is about more than choosing a beautiful Instagram feed. You need a team whose visual style, working approach, availability and delivery promise fit your wedding. Start six to twelve months ahead when possible, especially for October to March dates.

1. Study complete wedding galleries

Ask to see full galleries from weddings similar to yours. Look for consistency across ceremonies, family groups, low light, crowded dance floors, portraits and quiet in-between moments. A highlights reel shows the best moments; a complete gallery shows the real working style.

2. Match the style to your priorities

Decide whether you prefer documentary candids, guided portraits, dramatic editorial frames, traditional family coverage or a blend. Share examples, but also ask how the team works when the timeline is busy or the light changes.

3. Confirm exactly who will attend

Clarify the number of photographers, filmmakers and assistants for each function. For a multi-day Indian wedding, ask who covers parallel events and whether the same lead person will be present for the main ceremony.

4. Read the package and contract

Check hours, event coverage, travel, accommodation, taxes, albums, films, reels, raw files, delivery dates and payment milestones. Ask whether overtime is charged and how postponements or cancellations are handled.

5. Ask about backup plans

There should be a clear plan for illness, equipment failure, memory cards, data backup and weather. Ask where files are backed up after each event and how long the original files are retained.

6. Have a real conversation

A video call can reveal whether communication feels easy. Tell the team about family dynamics, important rituals, privacy preferences and people who must be photographed. Ask for references from recent couples if you need more confidence.

Make a short list before the date fills

Compare three or four complete proposals, then hold your preferred date only after the scope and payment terms are written down. Availability matters, but clarity matters just as much.
